Academy of Finland is funding research position for a motivated doctoral student in the research project “Maintenance and translation of mitochondrial DNA in severe multiorgan disorders of childhood” of Academy Researcher Reetta Hinttala, PhD at the Institute of Clinical Medicine, University of Oulu. Project starting date is November 1, 2013. Duration of research project is fixed-term contract and at first, one year (including a trial period of 3 months), but it can be continued. 

About Scholarship: A position for a motivated doctoral student is available in the research project “Maintenance and translation of mitochondrial DNA in severe multiorgan disorders of childhood” of Academy Researcher Reetta Hinttala, PhD at the Institute of Clinical Medicine, University of Oulu.

The research project is funded by the Academy of Finland. The project of the PhD student will focus on the factors behind the mitochondrial biogenesis (translation and assembly of OXPHOS complexes) and the goal is to identify novel pathogenic mechanisms behind mitochondrial disorders of childhood.

The student will apply for admission to the University of Oulu Graduate School at the beginning of the project and the aim is to complete the PhD thesis within four years. The project is part of a research consortium studying pediatric mitochondrial disorders in Northern Finland initiated and led by Adjunct Professor Johanna Uusimaa, MD, PhD.

The successful candidate should preferably have Master’s degree in biochemistry or biology. Some experience in mammalian cell culture and in basic cell and molecular biology techniques is appreciated.

Eligibility: The successful candidate should preferably have Master’s degree in biochemistry or biology. Some experience in mammalian cell culture and in basic cell and molecular biology techniques is appreciated.

Duration: Duration of the fixed-term contract is, at first, one year (including a trial period of 3 months), but it can be continued. 

Value: The salary will be based on level 2 of the demands level chart for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities, supplemented by personal work performance up to 46.3% of the job demands level (range from 1944,69 to 2845,08 € per month). The post holder will be appointed under a full employment contract and the employment policy guidelines of the University of Oulu for teaching and research personnel are followed. Starting date for project: November 1, 2013.
